History

Bruegge Furniture was the vision of Theodore Bruegge who immigrated to Breese, Illinois, from Westphalia, Germany, in 1870. Theodore was a casket maker who realized his American dream by opening his own successful business. He capitalized on his woodworking skills by also handcrafting and selling his own furniture.

The business was carried on in the 20th century by Theodore’s son, Henry, and grandson, Ferdinand, who both expanded the business and developed it into a multi-brand retailer rooted in the motto of “customer satisfaction.”

Today, Bruegge Furniture is one of the nation’s oldest family-owned furniture stores. Mike Bruegge, the fourth generation successor, owns and operates the store with his wife, Sheila, who is also the store’s interior designer. Mike and Sheila relocated the business in Highland, Illinois, in 1984, and they continue to improve their business as it approaches its 135th year of family ownership. Even with the onslaught of the technological era, Bruegge Furniture remains dedicated to its focus on customer satisfaction, and Mike and Sheila continue to welcome loyal and new customers every day.
